to sit in their midst

These Rocky Road Krispies Bars are super simple to make and require no oven time. They’re a family favorite, perfect for the holidays or any time of year!

My father and mother in-law don’t do a whole lot of baking, but they do love to partake in dessert. Especially when it involves chocolate and nuts. Archie joins me in my affection for dark chocolate, but Loree isn’t much of a fan. She prefers milk chocolate, just like her youngest offspring, the boy I married. So oftentimes I try to find that fine line between dark and milk, a compromise that we can all enjoy. I played around a little bit with this recipe from Blake’s mom, to darken the chocolate flavor just a bit. But now I’m finding this treat ever so much more enticing and irresistible and naughty-for-my-waistline, that I’m questioning why I did such a thing!

I hope you like this recipe, a favorite from my husband’s side of the family:  Loree’s Rocky Road Krispies Bars {no bake!}.

The recipe card above is from Blake’s mom, in her handwriting. I keep this card in my recipe box, in the upper cupboard between the sink and stove. Loree always complains that her writing is atrocious, but I think quite the opposite. It’s neat and tidy, and has just a touch of whimsy with curly appendages sprinkled here and there. Most often, when I add a recipe to this online blog, I will throw away my original paper copy of the recipe. But that won’t happen to this card. No, this card will stick around for the memories.

Do you have a recipe box? Not an electronic kind available online or with an app. I’m talking about an old fashioned recipe box with a hinged lid, tabbed category dividers, and handwritten recipe cards in penmanship that ranges from Mom, to Grandma, to Aunts Roxie and Patsy and Donna and Dolores and Mary Jane and June. As I finger through the recipes, my mind drifts down gravel roads, in and out of farm yards, homes, and kitchens, and I can hear the voices of the family I hold dear. I hear familiar stories and laughter – lots of laughter. And I feel the desire to connect with them, to sit in their midst.

These rocky road krispies bars are super simple to make and require no oven time, my mother in-law’s favorite kind of recipe. They are, essentially, a homemade candy bar, filled with all kinds of deliciousness. And I especially like the texture. The Rice Krispies and marshmallows help to loosen up the chocolate mixture, providing small pockets of crispiness and pillowy softness. Combined with a variety of nuts, these bars are the perfect combination of yum.
